Veronica was sure that Rick couldn’t have said anything else that would have made her want to kiss him more, and with a feeling deep down that she was doing the right thing, she reached up and pulled his head down to hers. When his warm lips brushed hers, a bolt of pleasure raced through her with surprising intensity, and she gasped, opening her mouth to him. His tongue slipped inside her mouth, and she closed her eyes as another wave of sensation washed over her, leaving her slightly dizzy.

Wrapping her arms around his neck, she held on as he explored her mouth, tasting and teasing until they were both breathless. When he finally pulled away, she lay looking up at him, her brain fuzzy and her body trembling as a slow smile spread across his face. She smiled back at him, feeling her cheeks turning pink, then, surprised at her own daring, pulled him down again and kissed him again.

This time when he pulled away from her, it was with a groan that rumbled out from deep in his chest. He lay down on his back, pulling her with him, and she settled her head onto his chest and listened to his heart pounding, feeling warmth spreading through her. Above them, the stars were bright in the sky, and the moon made the water sparkle, but all she could think about was kissing him again.

Knowing that would be a mistake, she searched her mind for something to distract her. “Rick, the other night, you said something that confused me,” she finally said, suddenly nervous that she’d brought it up. “You said you’d explain, I know we weren’t going to talk about Eddie and all that, but...well...I guess I just need to know.”

He was silent for so long, she was sorry that she’d asked, was sure that she’d messed up, but deep inside, she knew that she needed to know, that if he couldn’t explain it to her, it would come between them. After a long sigh, Rick sat up, taking her with him, then put his arm around her and pulled her closer, but he didn’t look at her. Instead, he stared down into the water.

“I don’t know where to start. This isn’t something I’ve ever talked to anyone about,” Rick said, finally looking over at her. “Dean knew but he was the only one, and even he couldn’t help me.”

She reached over and took his hand. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have pushed you,” she said. “I don’t want to force you to tell me. It can wait until you’re ready, and if you never are, then I’ll understand.”

He looked over at her, his face full of indecision, then shook his head. “No, you need to know. I don’t want to hide anything from you,” he said. “When I was eighteen, my father was mauled by a bear, and since that night, I’ve never been the same.”

“I saw an old newspaper article about that,” she said. “It must have been awful.
